Review Week 17

What I learned from this article is that the origin of the word serif can be traced back to ancient Rome because the stone carvers had to paint on the stones first and that caused them to have a little bit extra after the tetters and then the carvers would include that in their carvings. And that the term serif means something like "forms with/made with legs" in Chinese or "fish scales" in Japanese. And there two main types of serifs, Adnate and Abrupt. Adnate is more organic and Abrupt squarer and more rigid.

Classify the following typefaces and briefly explain why you believe it should be classified that way:

Black letter, because it is highly ornamented and it has elaborate thick and thin strokes.

Old Style, because of the wedge shaped serifs and the low contrast between thick and thin strokes

Decorative, because it looks like it was designed for one specific purpose as apposed to a range of reasons.

San Serif, because the stroke is all the same and it is very boring

Slab Serif, because it has thick, square serifs and the stroke is uniform.

Script, this typeface resembles handwriting and it looks like it could have been mad with a brush.

Old Style, because of the wedge shaped serifs and the low contrast between thick and thin strokes
