Answer:
*Balance: This can help with the overall heaviness of a design, by placing the objects/text on the page equally  
*Contrast: This can add some interest to a piece by emphasizing an idea of concept
*Proportion/Scale: This can make a design pop by unevenly scaling two things that are normal very similar.
*Emphasis: This can help make a certain object stick out more by using one of the other principles
*Rhythm: This can help with the flow of a piece by having something reacher but it not be the same thing.
*Repetition: This helps an idea come across by repeating the same object over and over. 
*Unity: This principle helps pull the design together because it makes sure that the piece sticks together.
*Variety: This helps with interest by putting in things that are very different but work together.

Answer: They use it to see how the piece will flow like InDesign. 
11/30/12: What steps does a designer take to design a page layout from a concept to final product.
Answer:
  • Research: Find what else is out there, inspiration, background information on your subject or message, audience. Books, magazines, online, everywhere.
  • Brainstorm and Inspiration: Who is my client? What message am I trying to communicate? What am I trying to tell my audience? What kind of colors or styles will work for this audience? Come up with adjectives that will describe your message and your piece. Find pieces that inspire you and have pieces that you like and may want to include in your design.
  • Sketch: Create thumbnails to quickly record thoughts and ideas - placement, colors, typefaces, images.
  • Execute: Combine type and imagery into a well developed composition. Use design principles, visual organization guidelines, different techniques and options. Don't try to force an idea.
  • Critique and Revise: Take a step back and look at the design objectively. Have someone else look at the image. Tweak the design if something isn't working.
