"Podcast #2 Color Theory"

The right use of color can do what?

Maximize productivity, minimize visual fatigue, and relax the whole body.

Within the electromagnetic spectrum, which waves allow us to see color?

Visible Light

Describe white light?

Equal parts of all colors in visible spectrum

How do we see color if objects "have no color of their own"?

The object absorbs colors and reflects the colors that we see.

What is a glass prism?

A transparent triangular object that breaks white light into all the colors of the visible light spectrum

What seven colors result when white light is refracted through a prism?

Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, Violet

Describe hue?

The color itself

When does white light occur?

When all wavelengths are reflected back to your eye

When does black light occur?

When no light is reflected to your eye

How color is perceived depends on what?

The type of light it is seen with

What is a color wheel?

Visual tool that shows the relationship between all colors

What are primary colors? Name them?

Colors that are mixed to make other colors, the base colors. Red, Yellow, Blue

What are secondary colors? Name them?

Colors that are made when two primary colors are mixed. orange, green, violet

What are tertiary colors? Name them?

Colors that are made when a primary and a secondary color is mixed. red-orange, yellow-orange, yellow-green, blue-green, blue-violet, and red-violet.

What are neutral colors? How can they be created?

Colors of very low saturation. By mixing complimentary colors.

How can a neutral color help a design?

Help put the focus on other colors or serve to tone down overpowering colors.

What are complementary colors? Name them?

Colors that are positioned opposite of each other on the color wheel. Red and Green, Orange and Blue, Yellow and Purple

What is color value?

The lightness or darkness of the color

What is a shade?

A low-value color, adding black

What is a tint?

A high-value color, adding white.

What is saturation/intensity?

Brightness of a color

What happens when you mix complementary colors together?

Produces a dull tone

Describe color harmony?

Pleases the eye, engages the viewer, creates a sense of order.

What is a color scheme?

Harmonious color combinations.

Describe a monochromatic color scheme?

A color scheme that uses values of a color.

Describe an analogous color scheme?

A color scheme that uses 3 colors next to each other on the color wheel

Describe a complementary color scheme?

A color scheme that uses 2 colors opposite each other on the wheel.

Describe a split-complementary color scheme?

A color scheme that uses 3 colors, 1 color+2 adjacent to its compliment.

Describe a triadic color scheme?

Uses 3 colors equally spaced around the color wheel.

What colors are considered to be warm colors?

Red, Orange, Yellow

Describe a warm color scheme?

Makes the image "come forward"

What colors are considered to be cool colors?

Blue, Green, Purple,

Describe a cool color scheme?

Makes the image "fall back"

Why is important to consider which colors are being used within a design?

So they can help you portray the right visual image.
